The IRC opened the country program in Afghanistan in 1988. Our programs span the range from humanitarian relief to early recovery and development activities, focusing on child protection, education, economic wellbeing, health, and power. The IRC works in 10 provinces throughout Afghanistan, among which some of the most security volatile, and employs over 1000 staff.

The Cleaner will have responsibilities that include:
- Maintain cleanliness and sanitation across all health center areas—including patient rooms, hallways, restrooms, and administrative spaces—in strict compliance with Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) standards.
- Conduct routine cleaning, washing, and surface disinfection of environmental equipment using standard procedures and approved chemical agents.
- Safely utilize and manage cleaning detergents, disinfectants, maintenance equipment, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Handle the segregation, collection, transfer, and disposal of medical waste following health facility guidelines, established SOPs, and safety protocols.
- Maintain all cleaning equipment and tools in good working condition and fulfill additional related tasks assigned by the supervisor.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Perform routine cleaning and disinfection across examination rooms, clinical service areas, waiting rooms, and other shared spaces utilized by patients and staff.
- Clean and sanitize surfaces immediately after contamination with blood, body fluids, or infectious materials, using appropriate PPE and strict infection control protocols.
- Maintain cleanliness in restrooms and handwashing stations through regular cleaning, disinfection, and timely replenishment of essential supplies.
- Track supply levels and report shortages of water, soap, disinfectants, and other critical sanitation materials.
- Empty waste receptacles on a fixed schedule and transfer waste to designated sites following the center’s waste segregation protocols.
- Frequently clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces used by staff and visitors, including door handles, tables, chairs, and handrails.
- Assist in organizing and preparing facility rooms and spaces for medical services, meetings, health campaigns, and special events.
- Report contamination hazards, chemical spills, plumbing or sewage faults, and broken sanitation facilities promptly to prevent safety risks.
- Follow established guidelines for mixing, diluting, using, and storing cleaning agents and chemical disinfectants safely.
- Keep the facility grounds, entryways, exits, and exterior surroundings clean, safe, and welcoming for visitors.
- Work closely with the health center manager to maintain a safe, sanitary environment that limits infection transmission and supports quality care.
- Inform the direct supervisor of any facility repair requirements, equipment issues, or supply shortages in a timely manner.
Job Requirment
Educational Qualifications and Work Requirements:
- Graduated from Grade 12 or possesses at least basic literacy skills (reading and writing).
- At least one year of relevant work experience.
Other Skills:
- Literacy in local languages (Pashto and Dari).
- Must be a team player with excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work patiently under pressure in a high-stress environment.
- Effective communication skills in the languages commonly used in the area.
- Ability to read and write.
